The question was actually driven by a comment I had made about how we house 18 students at capacity. But, that we have for some special events turned them so that we could fit 20 mats, and she wanted to know why we wouldn’t shoot for 20 all of the time? Valid Question!
Well it stems back a long long long way- Sun salutations are meant to be done in the am facing the rising sun. (a commitment exercise before the sun is up?- WHAT? HA!) But hence, this is why our studio mats are oriented east and west, and why our heads are on the west when we lie in savasana. So that as we practice we are reverently facing the rising sun. Often times we do things out of respect for the process, for the ceremony, for the details, this is a simple item to carry out, so we keep the intention!
Let’s be REAL folks, every little bit helps. Right, even if it doesn’t feel as though the effects of the direction of your mat or your intentions are immediate, it’s like with anything, PATIENCE, good things come to those who wait. Yours too is about to come! Keep at it!
